France exploded the first nuclear device of her latest series at Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific. The announcement of the explosion-of a bomb hung from a balloon-came from the New Zealand frigate Otago, which had been dispatched to protest the nuclear testing. Reuters said later that the explosion was the 27th in France's nuclear program in the Pacific. (NYT, 7/22/73, 1)
