Red Star (Krasnaya Zvezda) of the U.S.S.R. stated Tiros III and Midas III launched on July 12 were comparable to the U-2: "A spy is a spy, no matter what height it flies."

NASA Administrator Webb, in congressional testimony, pointed out that the Tiros cloud-cover program was known to the entire world, involved no surveillance, and promised great benefit to all nations. He pointed out that data from Tiros satellites had been made available to all, including the Soviet Union.

Central Aero Club of the U.S.S.R., in seeking to place Gagarin's flight in the record books, revealed to FAI Astronautics Documentation Subcommittee, meeting in Paris, that Gagarin rode his spacecraft to Earth rather than parachuting.
