NASA announced that Russell L. Schweickart had resigned to take a position with a State of California commission on energy resources that plans and regulates the state energy system. Schweikart flew the first lunar module on Apollo 9 in 1969 and was commander of the backup crew for the first Skylab mission. In May 1974 he became director of user affairs in the Office of Applications at NASA Headquarters; in September 1976, he was named assistant for payload operations in Planning and Program Integration and was detailed in September 1977 to the State of California as assistant to the governor for science and technology.
