During severe geomagnetic storm, two Geiger tubes on EXPLORER VII found anomalies in the outer radiation zone at about 1,000-km altitude, which appeared to be correlated In space and time with optical emissions from the atmosphere below. Very intense narrow zones of radiation were detected over a visible aurora during one orbit.

November 28-29: Comdr. M. Ross and Dr. O. B. Moore flew ONR STRATO-LAB HIGH IV balloon to an altitude of 81,000 feet, using a 16-inch telescope and spectrograph, and observing water vapor in the atmosphere of the planet Venus.
