NASA announced award of, an approximately $4.3 million contract to Control Data Corporation, Minneapolis, Minn., for maintenance of the Langley Research Center computer complex, consisting of computer systems and auxiliary devices for processing scientific data to support center research programs and the scientific, engineering, and other technical personnel performing analyses, experimental data reduction, and real-time simulations. Work on the 2yr contract with three 1yr options for extension began Sept. 28. (LaRC Release 78-55)
NOAA announced that the American Water Resources Assn. would sponsor the fifth annual William T. Pecora memorial symposium June 11-15, 1979, in Sioux Falls, S. Dak. The Dept. of Interior's U.S. Geological Survey EROS data center would host the program, to focus attention on satellite remote sensing for observing the hydrosphere as a means of averting water shortages and of water management. Participants-scientists from NOAA's Natl. Environmental Satellite Service, the U.S.G.S., NASA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, universities, and private industry-would present papers on applications of space technology to all phases of hydrology and water resources. New satellites such as Landsat 3, Nimbus 7, the heat capacity mapping mission satellite, and SEASAT 1; new or improved sensors, including the scanning multifrequency microwave radiometer and synthetic-aperture radar; improved resolution on Landsat and HCMM thermal scanners; and new thermal bands on the advanced very high-resolution radiometer had affected hydrological technology and would be the subject of papers describing these improvements and capabilities.
