U.S.S.R. launched Molniya 11-3 communications satellite to transmit Soviet TV programs and provide multichannel radio communications throughout Orbita network. Orbital parameters: 39 204km (24 357.8-mi) apogee, 480-km (298.3-mi) perigee, 11-hr 43-min period, and 65.3° inclination. (FBIS-Sov, 10/2/72, Ll; Spacewarn, 10/17/72)
President Nixon signed H.J.R. 1227, ratifying U.S.-U.S.S.R. Interim Agreement with Respect to the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms. He said treaty was "beginning of a process that is enormously important that will limit now, and, we hope, later reduce the burden of arms, and thereby reduce the danger of war." (PD, 10/2/72, 1474)
