NASA boilerplate model of Mercury capsule successfully launched on an Atlas (Big Joe) missile from AMR and recovered in South Atlantic after surviving reentry heat of more than 10,000° P.

First launch of operational AF Atlas ICBM from Vandenberg AFB was successful, and second Atlas ICBM fired from Cape Canaveral the same day.
