The Soviet Union developed a number of satellite systems that were closely integrated with military weapons systems. Their RORSAT and EORSAT satellite systems, intended to target American naval vessels for attack, are the best example of using satellites as a direct extension of military missions. Although much about these programmes remains classified, it is now possible to discuss many previously unknown details of their history.
