[edit] Abstract

The paper does not cover the evolution of life on Earth, going back to the chemistry of primeval soups, but describes processes that might have occurred during the first phases of land colonization. It first deals with a little basic biology to outline some very important principles and then illustrates them more fully with the aid of examples.
