[edit] Abstract

The Copernican Principle is used to determine the abundance of extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way. The study is extended to include possible civilizations not based upon planets that orbit stars and also to the abundance of life in other galaxies. The implications to SETI research are briefly discussed.
