Dr. O. M. Solandt, chairman of the Defense Research Board of Canada, announced in April 1952 that an air-to-air missile was being developed by the Canadian Armament Research And Development Establishment (CARDE), at Valcartier, Quebec. The missile was to be used aboard the CF-100 fighter jet being built by A.V. Roe Canada. In August 1953 the missile reached flight-test stage aboard an F-86 Sabre. Early in 1956 the programme was cancelled to be replaced by the U.S. designed Sparrow missile. Velvet Glove was engineered to the requirements outlined by CARDE and was built by Canadair in Montreal. Over 400 technicians and designers worked on the project.
