11-12 May: More than 500 weather balloons were launched from 55 stations in Marshall Space Flight Center's Atmospheric Variability Experiment (AVE-2) to provide data for comparison with data collected by NASA and Air Force weather satellites. The balloons-released by NASA, National Weather Service, National Severe Storms Laboratory in Oklahoma, and Eglin Air Force Base-flew as high as 30 km while measuring atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction.
