Deputy Secretary of Defense William P. Clements, Jr., approved Air Force plans for initial production of the A-10 close air support aircraft, The Dept. of Defense would release $39 million in FY 1975 funds for long-lead-time items. Approval was granted to buy 52 aircraft from the manufacturer with the provision that contract options to procure a smaller quantity be kept open. Selection of the A-10 for full develop-ment followed a competitive prototype flyoff in 1972. Since that time two A-10 prototypes had flown almost 500 hrs in test flights. (DOD Release 346-74)
