NASA and the Federal Government as a whole were charged with race and sex discrimination in a class action suit filed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense Fund in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The suit was initiated by two employees at Johnson Space Center. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund labeled as "lame excuses" NASA's claims that work forces were dropping throughout the agency and that it was difficult to find qualified blacks and women in its specialized areas of work.
