Fred Whipple's first paper on meteoroid impacts on spacecraft, "Possible hazards to satellite vehicles from meteorites" is published by the RAND Corporation as a supplement to their May 2 1946 seminal study "Preliminary Design of an Experimental World-Circling Spaceship". Whipple would develop this into what became known as the Whipple Shield.
