Dr. George R. Carruthers of Naval Research Laboratory received NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal at special NASA Hq. ceremony. Dr. Carruthers-outstanding black astrophysicist who had developed rocket-borne instrument that detected molecular hydrogen in interstellar space for first time in 1970-was cited for development of far-ultraviolet camera-spectrograph for Apollo 16 mission. Instrument had taken nearly 200 pictures of earth, Milky Way, and other galaxies in far-uv wavelengths not observable from earth and was providing new information on structure of universe. People's Republic of China signed preliminary agreement to buy two Anglo-French Concorde supersonic transport aircraft. Agreement was announced later at Paris press conference by Aerospatiale President Henri Ziegler, who said aircraft were for delivery in mid- 1977. (Samuelson, W Post, 7/25/72, D8)

Navy and Dept. of Defense officials were quoted in Wall Street Journal as saying preliminary investigation by Navy examining board into June 30 crash of F-14 Navy fighter aircraft had indicated accident was not caused by "anything wrong" with aircraft. (Levine, WSJ, 7/27/72, 6)

Poll of 123 persons in 6 Moroccan villages had shown 63% thought U.S. lunar landings were hoax or had doubts about them, Washington Post reported. Of those polled, 88% said they had heard of manned lunar missions since 1969. Of 20 persons between ages of 14 and 25, 55% believed reports of moon landings; only 25% of 20 persons between ages of 61 and 90 thought reports were true. Of villagers who believed men had gone to moon, 20% thought landings had been made by Russians. (Aubin, W Post, 7/24/72, AI4)

July 24-26: Second annual Urban Technology Conference and Technical Display was held in San Francisco, NASA exhibited new building trades materials, including flat electrical conductor cables and low-voltage switching circuits that had been developed for space use, fire resistant materials, and earth-resources surveillance display including cameras and sensors. Also shown were samples of pavement patching materials, medical aids, psychomotor response tester for use by traffic departments and educational institutions, and devices for checking blood circulation, electrocardiograph readings, and circulation in humans. Guest speakers included William M. Magruder, Special Counsel to President, and former astronaut Walter M. Schirra, Chairman of Environmental Control Co. Jeffrey T. Hamilton of NASA Office of Technology Utilization presented paper describing mechanisms evolved by NASA to transfer aerospace technology to nonaerospace use. Mechanisms ranged from specialized dissemination systems of published technologies to attempts to solve specific problems in public sector areas like biomedicine, environmental protection, fire safety, building construction, transportation, and law enforcement.
