M2-F3 lifting body, piloted by William H. Dana, completed 14th flight from Flight Research Center after air-launch from B-52 aircraft. Objective of powered flight was to check out command augmentation system and engine accumulator modification. M2-F3 reached 17 300-m (57 000-ft) altitude and mach 0.86. Flight was first for M2-F3 since its removal from flight status in January for installation of command augmentation fly-by-wire system. (NASA proj off)

Manned Spacecraft Center announced award of 10-mo, $98 000 contract extension to Martin Marietta Corp. Denver Div. for continued design of crew compartment configured for space shuttle, which would be tested in neutral buoyancy tank. Extension brought total value of con-tract to $173 670. Federal Aviation Administration had approved airport planning project funding of $9 061 104 for 181 projects in 39 states under its Planning Grant Program for FY 1971, Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe announced. FY 1971 funding had been $3 636 035 for 42 projects in 27 states. (FAA Release 72-147)

Los Angeles Times editorial commented on Erts 1 Earth Resources Technology Satellite (launched July 23) : "ERTS gives every sign of being an achievement of enormous potential. It is a demonstration of the value of the U.S. space program in applying technology both to extending the frontiers of knowledge, and in contributing to the improvement of life on earth."
